The Role of Nutrition in Disease Prevention

No one can refute the importance of a well-balanced diet for a healthy lifestyle. What you choose or don’t choose to eat can undeniably go a long way in determining how susceptible your body is to a range of diseases and chronic illnesses.
Let’s take at some of the diseases that the right diet and nutrition can help you ward off.
 Obesity
The prevalence of obesity in the United States is alarming. According to the National Center of Health Statistics at the CDC, it’s estimated that a 3/4th of the American population will be overweight or obese by 2020. This can give rise to a multitude of problems such as heart diseases, diabetes, and even cancer. By maintaining a balance between nutritional food consumption and exercise, a person can escape the epidemic of obesity.
Cardiovascular diseases
Cardiovascular diseases are the primary causes of death in adults and are largely caused by an individual’s inability to maintain a well-balanced and nutritious diet. To prevent the risk of developing heart diseases, one must ensure that their blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and weight are under control. This can be done through the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and by steering clear of saturated fats that can clog our arteries and put a strain on our heart to disrupt its functions.

Cancer
Maintaining a healthy diet can significantly reduce the risk of developing esophagus cancer, colorectum cancer, and kidney cancer. A combination of essential vitamins and minerals found in food such as green leafy vegetablesand vitamin C rich fruits such as berries can protect your body against cancer. In addition to that, eating smaller portions of lean meat and protein can also be beneficial for your body.
Osteoporosis
Brittle and fragile bones caused by the loss of tissue due to calcium and vitamin deficiencies are a common problem among adults—in fact, an estimated 10 million people in the United States have osteoporosis. Consumption of low-fat foods, as well as calcium and vitamin-rich foods, are the best way to lessen the likelihood of developing a low bone density as you age. Staying away from carbonated beverages and drinking soy milk also helps.
